I have been having so much fun creating songs using Suno AI. At first it was really clunky and I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but over time I think I’m getting better at crafting the songs I want to hear. I’ve been writing a lot of narrative-driven songs, based primarily around stories and characters I’ve written. It’s an entirely new kind of creative outlet that I’ve never really experienced before.
Writing song lyrics is a lot like writing poetry. I’ve been spending a lot of time on rhymezone.com, and experimenting with different rhyme and lyric structures to create the effect I want. For example, a simple ABAB rhyme pattern with a four-syllable cadence in the lines could work well to create a slower, more hypnotic rhythm, but other songs might need a more broken structure that lets the rhythm breathe and break in all the right places to create a sense of emotional unraveling.
For anyone who’s curious, here are the initial production notes I sketched out for my most recent song, “Ashes of the Crown”. This is the work I do after I've written an initial draft of the song's lyrics that I'm more or less happy with. It's a behind the scenes look at the beginning of my creative process when I’m laying out the groundwork for a new song:
Production Notes for Ashes of the Crown:
Song Title: Ashes of the Crown
Character: Roca (from The Demon Thief)
Genre: Cinematic dark pop / ambient industrial
Mood: Brooding, seductive, mythic, emotionally unraveling
Tempo: Mid-slow, pulsing rhythm with ambient swells and industrial accents
Vocal Tone: gravelly, hypnotic, layered with whispers and distorted harmonies
Structure:
Intro – Ritual Echoes
Verse 1 – Infernal Inheritance
Verse 2 – The Split
Chorus 1 – Exile & Hunger
Verse 3 – Arrival in Nocturna
Bridge – Intrigue & Possession
Chorus 2 – The Beginning
Outro – Whispered Fade
Even with all of my notes and planning, it still takes a bit of trial and error to get a song that I’m happy with. Sometimes it’s an exercise in frustration, and try-try-again until I get it right. But this one turned out really well, I think.
Here’s how the final version of the song ended up, along with the lyric video I made for it:
Ashes of the Crown is a cinematic dark pop anthem tracing the fall and rise of Roca, a demon prince exiled from the infernal plane. Raised under the iron rule of his father Malakar, Roca once wielded cruelty as command—but the fire within him began to shift. Drawn to the spirit and defiance of humanity, he fled his father’s dominion and now walks the streets of Nocturna in human guise. This song unfolds like a whispered rebellion: haunted by legacy, seduced by possibility, and ignited by the moment he first lays eyes on a mortal thief named Kody. It’s the beginning of a story written in flame, lust, and the slow unraveling of control.
Let me know what you think? I tried to make the lyric video as cinematic and narrative-driven as I could, to capture the overall feel of the song. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
I’d love to know if any of you are playing around with AI music, and what successes and frustrations you might be having with it! ❤️
